A solo for shopping windows, London/New Zealand

A woman in a box dances in a display window on London’s busiest shopping street. Is the box a place of constraint, a place of privacy, a trap, or a vantage point? Exploring the roles of women from multi-tasking super organiser to clothes horse and sex goddess, Boxed unnerves and intrigues in seven sisters group’s inimitable style.

A ‘solo for display’ was performed in a life-size box in 3 shopping windows on Oxford Street, to a mix of invited and incidental audiences, who viewed the woman, seemingly muted by the noise of the street. In 2012 the solo was restaged with a New Zealand dancer, by invitation of Living Room Festival in Auckland, and funded by the British Council and Arts Council New Zealand.

Commissioned by Big Dance – Mayor of London, funded by Arts Council of England, with support by John Lewis, Habitat, Debenhams and House of Fraser.
